Netflix: the content war

Netflix will spend US$7 billion to US$8 billion on content in 2018 as the streaming wars escalate, it said this week.

As this chart shows, it’s double what the company spent in 2015:

That cash goes toward a mix of licensed and original programming. “Our future largely lies in exclusive original content,” said Netflix in its latest earnings report. Stranger Things is among the recent hits for Netflix’s studio.

Silicon Valley rival HBO spent US$2 billion on content last year, while Amazon whipped out US$4.5 billion from its deep pockets. It’s not known how much Netflix’s Asian rivals, iFlix and Hooq, are forking out to secure TV series and movies for subscribers. iFlix debuted its first original show in April, while Hooq has commissioned its first series.
