The news (extracted from Channel NewsAsia):
- Mediacorp and Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) are teaming up to launch a new digital advertising marketplace in Singapore.
- The two media companies today signed a memorandum of understanding to form a joint venture, which will tentatively be named Singapore Media Exchange (SMX).
- The joint venture, which will be fully launched in 2018, aims to offer brands a high-quality advertising environment, as well as effective targeting of audiences.
Why it matters:
- It would appear these two domestic rivals have decided to pool resources in the face of almost unassailable competition. The global digital advertising market is dominated by Google and Facebook, which between them are expected to claim half of all online ad revenue worldwide this year.
- The joint venture would represent yet another diversification move from SPH, which has been investing in a wide array of business areas outside of news media and publishing in recent years. In the past couple of months it has teamed up with China’s Zhubajie and Malaysia’s RecomN, both of which operate in the freelance services space. In April, it acquired nursing home operator Orange Valley Healthcare.
