Brief: Singapore food delivery startup’s hygiene status downgraded after curry caused diarrhoea

The news:

  • The National Environment Agency (NEA) has downgraded the hygiene status of Singapore food delivery startup Grain from an “A” to a “C”.
  • This came after 20 people fell ill from gastroenteritis after consuming its food on May 15.
  • The status will be reviewed after a year. Meanwhile, NEA will surveil its kitchen.
  • Grain CEO Yi Sung Yong has apologized and said that processes were changed to prevent this from happening again.

Why it matters:

  • Grain is likely to take a reputation hit after this incident. However, no other food poisoning incidents from the company have come to light so far.
  • Provided that this is an isolated case and processes moving forward are airtight, Grain will likely be unaffected in the long run.
  • Grain differs from most internet startups because it owns the entire supply chain from food preparation to delivery. Startups of this nature can have control over the entire user experience but will need to ensure all parts of the chain are well-managed.
