Hiring can be a long and tedious process. According to First Round in their recent State of Startups report, hiring ranked as the top concern amongst startup founders, beating concerns such as customer acquisition and revenue growth.
With the half-year mark of 2017 recently behind us, now is a good time as any to review your company strategy. Having processed close to 100,000 applications from over 8,000 job seekers all over Asia in the first half of the year, we’ve gleaned insights about the talent market you might find interesting. Here are some of them:
1. 125% growth in the number of employers.
More employers including Skyscanner, SEA (formerly Garena), and Lazada are looking for talent. The number of jobs employing tech talent specifically has grown by over 48% in the past year. While this is driven by the growth in tech companies, we also see many traditional companies hiring digital savvy talent. Based on a survey conducted by Microsoft across leaders in Asia Pacific, as many as 80% of them recognized the importance of digital transformation in order to stay relevant.
2. Active tech talent grew by over 55%.
It is evident that there is a growing number of talent looking for technical jobs, especially web developers, data analysts, & DevOps engineers. Competition is stiff, with so many companies vying for the same type of talent. On average, an applicant applies to at least 10 jobs at once!
Three things that may tip the scales in your favor in making successful hires are working on good employer branding, improving the job post itself, and reducing the time taken to follow up with good applicants.
3. Not all tech jobs are equal.
While the demand for tech talent has grown exponentially, there are some functions that are more valued than others. DevOps & cloud management talent is one of them, with employers willing to pay USD$4,040 per talent per month on average across Asia. It’s also the most expensive to hire across all tech functions.
Of course, salary rates will differ between markets when you take into account standard of living. Seeing that it’s an important consideration to most developers, how can you know if you’re offering a competitive enough salary?
