Mobile training app raises $1.7m to gamify workplace education

Workplace training app Gnowbe announced today it has raised US$1.7 million for its seed round.

The funding comes from Coent Ventures, the venture capital subsidiary of Southeast Asia company builder REAPRA. 500 Startups and Australia-headquartered POEMS Ventures also joined in.

Angels like prominent Singaporean investor Koh Boon Hwee and mobile gaming company Kabam co-founder Holly Liu participated too.

Workforces around the world are rapidly transitioning to a ‘mobile-first’ mindset.

Gnowbe is headquartered in Singapore and in Silicon Valley. It specializes in workplace education through “micro-learning” – that is, through short-form, gamified courses on a phone that take no more than 10 minutes a day. The app delivers multimedia content and uses social features and gamification elements, like leaderboards and rewards, to keep users engaged.

A data analytics platform is available to users and employers to measure performance and progress.

“Workforces around the world are rapidly transitioning to a ‘mobile-first’ mindset. This presents a tremendous opportunity for businesses to empower employees through knowledge,” says CEO and co-founder of Gnowbe, So-Young Kang, in a statement.

Gnowbe will use the funding to grow its team of developers and sales and marketing people. The startup will work on new features, more training content, and partnerships with “key players in the industry.”

The company just announced such a partnership with KPMG Digital Village, a collaborative community of corporates, startups, investors, and government agencies to encourage new ideas for tech products and services.

Gnowbe claims to have more than 6,000 users with a monthly growth rate of 15 percent. It launched its app last year. Its clients include Unilever, Singtel, and Hertz.
