Many first-time founders struggle to define their startup culture in the beginning. It’s not easy, but building the right culture from day one is essential for creating a successful environment and paving the way forward for your startup as it grows and scales.
I recently asked Oswald Yeo, CEO of Glints, to share his two cents as a founder, on building a strong startup culture. In this interview, Oswald highlighted three useful tips – but for more exclusive advice dug out from the Glints cultural museum, you’ll have to sit in for his talk at the Startup 101 stage this May 18!
Tell us about Glint’s company culture, and what do you love most about it?
“Glints’ mission is to help young professionals discover careers they love and to help organizations hire this pool of passionate talent to achieve their own goals. What I love most about Glints is its mission-driven and relentless culture! We get things done and have fun along the way.
We don’t just play to play. We play to win. So even though there’s gonna be lots of fun and laughter, there’s gonna be a lot of hard work and sweat too. We have flexible hours, but it’s definitely not a 9-5 job. Building something great is never easy, so only those with grit and determination will survive. You’ve got to be willing to do whatever it takes.
It’s a young team here. Young, hungry and maybe foolish. Maybe that’s what makes us so dangerous! We do have a team of amazing, experienced investors and advisors backing and supporting us though. They fuel our growth not just with cash but also in giving guidance and opening doors for us.”
Describe the importance of culture in a startup.
“Culture shapes behaviour, which shapes the results you achieve and therefore how much success and impact the startup can make.
I believe that people thrive and do their best work when they are doing what they love, with people they love. Having a great culture allows you to attract, retain and motivate the best talent to perform and help you to grow your company.
Besides, work forms such a huge part of your life, why make it miserable by having a terrible team culture?”
If you could choose any movie character to be the culture mascot for Glints, who would it be and why?
“Maybe I need to watch more movies – I can’t think of anything!
I tried thinking hard and even did some google searches, but nothing comes to mind, so I am not going to cook up something here. Honesty is part of our culture too!”
Is there a particular company whose culture you admire?
“Zappos. I visited their office in Vegas a few years back and really admired how the culture of their company permeates through in the actions at every level of the company. Their culture is so strong, they even have a professional historian to curate the Zappos culture and history! That’s how seriously they treat culture.”
What are 3 quick tips you’d give startups who are trying to establish a positive company culture? And, what can we look forward to during your talk at Tech in Asia Singapore 2017?
“1. Define your culture consciously. There is going to be a culture anyway, so we might as well define what it is.
2. Prune the garden constantly. If there’s anyone who doesn’t fit into the culture, dare to make the hard decision to let them go.
3. Live and embody the culture at all times.
