- Facebook has unveiled a new app called Spaces, which lets you spend time with friends in virtual reality. You can chat with them, create virtual drawings, and watch 360-degree videos. The app, available only on Oculus Rift, creates an avatar of you based on your profile picture.
- Facebook is also pushing for Snap-like augmented reality effects in the Facebook app’s camera feature. The effects adjust as you move your camera. In the future, you could leave a virtual note for your friends to find. It’s launching a software, called AR Studio, to help developers create new camera experiences.
- Ahead of these announcements, made at Facebook’s annual developer conference F8, Snap unveiled an enhancement for its messaging app Snapchat. It introduced a new feature that lets users place 3D objects into their photos and videos. Facebook is, of course, Snap’s biggest threat.
