Uber is trying something new in India, today rolling out UberHire.

“It’s perfect for travellers exploring a new city, senior citizens who need to make trips punctuated with multiple stop overs, or for business travellers who have multiple meetings,” said Uber in a statement, describing the service that lets people hire a driver for up to 12 hours. It allows for unlimited stops.

It’s now available in New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Vizag, Nagpur, and Kochi with more cities to be added in the weeks to come.

An UberHire fare is calculated based on the distance and duration of the trip, with Uber indicating that eight hours spent exploring a city whilst covering 100 kilometers would cost around US$32.

The announcement comes in the midst of Uber’s battles with one Indian state over licenses for ride-sharing.

Ola, Uber’s homegrown arch-rival in India, already offers hourly rentals.
