In a nutshell: The iPhone 7 continues to be the cream of the crop of smartphones, although it has lost its edge. Top reviewers praised its improved camera, water resistance, faster processor, and improved battery life. Among users, water resistance has proved to be their favorite feature.
The lack of the headphone jack continues to bother both reviewers and users. Meanwhile, the tactile home button has received a lukewarm reception. Overall, the iPhone 7 feels like an animal that’s not fully evolved. It’s not quite a dinosaur, and not quite a bird.
Don’t be mistaken though: it’s still a great device. Buy it if you’re a diehard iPhone user who needs a replacement. But if you’re looking for pizazz, check out our review of the Google Pixel instead, which was released later and was scored just a tad higher by reviewers.

CNET:
The iPhone 7’s notable camera, battery and water resistance improvements are worthwhile upgrades to a familiar phone design. But ask yourself if you really need an upgrade… and if the Plus might be a better choice.
If you’re going to buy a new iPhone, this is the one to get – there’s a slightly longer battery life, a better camera, fast innards and protection against water. However, many of the changes are slight, and the iPhone 6S, for the lower price, suddenly becomes a very attractive option.
If you’re looking for newfangled features (or a headphone jack, for that matter), you’ll have to search elsewhere. While it’s not thrilling enough to warrant an immediate upgrade from last year’s 6s, the iPhone 7 is nonetheless an excellent smartphone.
iOS 10 is excellent, the cameras are better, and the performance is phenomenal. And the batteries last longer. These are terrific phones. But they are also incomplete.
The iPhone 7 won’t blow your mind with its design or features. It’s still a fantastic phone. And philosophically, it feels like Apple is throwing open a door. The iPhone 7 might not be a revolution, but it might be the catalyst for lots of them.
What users say
Hafsa Shorish was sold by the iPhone 7’s water resistance, after her iPhone 6 dropped into the toilet bowl. But it’s not an exciting upgrade. She finds the home button and lack of a headphone jack annoying.
The home button is pressure sensitive. Sometimes I have to press it harder and sometimes I have to tap it lightly.
And I usually use my Soundcloud while I’m in the car and I connected my iPhone with the aux cable. But now it’s a bit of a hassle. And I was travelling last week and realized I couldn’t use my air pods with the airplane’s system.
Nguyen Tuan Anh, a self described Apple fanboy, isn’t digging his phone. It hangs three to four times a day for unknown reasons. He’s not digging the missing headphone jack either, but it isn’t a dealbreaker.
Both Teoh Zetong and Elissa Ng aren’t bothered by the absent headphone jack.
“The box came with a Lightning headphone jack adapter, so I just have to bring that around along with my earpiece case,” said Zetong.
“Given that the new iPhone 7 battery is so superb, I now use less of the portable charger, so no trouble at all,” added Elissa.
They’re both also a fan of the new home button, as it resolves an annoying durability issue faced by iPhone users. “I no longer have to worry about my home button becoming loose after using it for a few years,” said Zetong.
