Florian Cornu and Arnaud Bonzom, authors of MAVA and the Singapore Startup Ecosystem & Entrepreneur Toolbox, today released Map of the Money 4.0, a tool for startups to raise funds in Singapore.
The duo says they verified the data on 65 active venture capital funds in Singapore by surveying the VCs, so the data is accurate. The map is based on investments made by the VCs in the last 12 months. As for new funds, the map looked at their ability to invest in Singaporean startups. Accelerators weren’t included in the survey as their sheer number warrants a whole study on its own.
You may access the map here. It works pretty simple: tap anywhere on the axis at the bottom to reveal how many VCs – and who – are writing checks of a certain amount.
How the landscape has changed
Here are some of the key findings of the survey, according to Florian and Arnaud:
- American VCs like 500 Startups and Sequoia Capital have boosted their presence in Singapore over the past two years.
- Golden Gate Ventures, Jungle Ventures, and Rakuten Ventures have moved from seed to series A investing. The three VCs started with US$10 million and below funds and are now closing their second funds worth between US$50 million and US$100 million.
- We’re beginning to see more Series B investing, particularly by B Capital Group.
- New corporate funds like CapitaLand Limited, Challenge Ventures, DeClout Limited, Garena Ventures, PSA unboXed, Razer Ventures, SPH Fund, Wilmar International Limited, and YCH Group Pte Ltd have emerged.
Florian and Arnaud also pointed out that several key acquisitions and investments reflect the “maturation of the ecosystem.” These include the purchase of Pie by Google, Zopim by Zendesk, and Luxola by Sephora, and the investment by Alibaba in Lazada and SingPost, Sequoia and Rakuten in Go-Jek, Emtek Group in Property Guru, and the fresh funding for Grab.
