China’s Weibo, launched three years after Twitter, is still on the rise. It’s now up to 340 million active users each month, according to the firm’s latest earnings report, which pushes it past Twitter for the first time ever.
Twitter lost users in early 2016 and then failed to grow much as the year progressed. Not even being the primary soundboard of the tub-thumping Donald Trump has helped it much.
Although there’s pretty much zero overlap between Twitter and Weibo in their user base, it’s a striking contrast of fortunes. Both have formidable rivals – Twitter is up against Facebook, while Weibo battles messaging app WeChat – that are themselves growing strongly.
Twitter and Facebook are blocked in China.
Weibo is likely aided by WeChat being a relatively private and closed-off environment, making the US$17 billion Twitter clone a hotspot for finding fun and viral content.
