A love (hate) story: Apple’s eight years in China

Eight years ago, Apple opened its first store in China. Today, there are 40 scattered across the country, the largest iPhone market in the world.

It’s been a love-hate relationship. The iPhone is both a status symbol for Chinese consumers, as well as fodder for smartphone copycats. The US tech company has reaped the benefits of China’s manufacturing system, but continues to wrestle against government policies. With rising competition from Chinese brands such as Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo, and declining revenue, Apple’s future in China is uncertain.

As the iPhone’s ten-year anniversary approaches, here’s a look at the past eight years of Apple in China.
