Google’s Android has finally usurped Microsoft’s Windows’ throne as the world’s most popular operating system. Independent web analytics company StatCounter found that Android topped the total internet usage across desktop, laptop, tablet and mobile combined at 37.93 percent. Windows is at 37.91 percent – second for the first time. This is based on global internet usage data for March.

“This is a milestone in technology history and the end of an era. It marks the end of Microsoft’s leadership worldwide of the OS market which it has held since the 1980s. It also represents a major breakthrough for Android which held just 2.4 percent of global internet usage share only five years ago,” Aodhan Cullen, CEO of StatCounter, said in an announcement to the press.

India has been instrumental in Android’s surge ahead. Android’s total usage in India stood at 61.8 percent for March, while Windows lagged far behind at 18.7 percent.

India is the fastest-growing smartphone market in the world, thanks to the recent influx of affordable smartphones. The country now has 462 million internet users – 79 percent of its internet users are on mobile.

Xiaomi, Oppo, and Huawei from neighboring China are selling like hotcakes in India. What’s making them happier is the fact that almost two-third of India’s 1.3 billion population is yet to come online, making it the one of the most promising smartphone markets in the world.
