If you’re at all into Korean dramas, it might be a no-brainer what your choice of messaging app is. One particular app was, after all, heavily featured in 2014’s hit drama My Love from the Star, where superstar Jeon Ji-hyun herself provided a demonstration of its many functions.
We’re talking about LINE, of course, the Japanese juggernaut with over 217 million monthly active users. Compared to rivals Whatsapp and WeChat, LINE has managed to distinguish itself with an array of exclusive features and a trademark virtual sticker collection.
Said virtual sticker collection now contains over 320,000 unique sets, all of which are available for purchase on LINE’s Sticker Store. And as if that weren’t already impressive enough, LINE has also evolved beyond simple messaging to encompass apps for games, music, manga and even taxi hailing. With as many as 69 apps in the LINE family, keeping each one up to snuff and coordinated with all of the others is no easy feat.
And that’s where a top-notch engineering team comes in.
Building a conducive environment for engineers
As LINE’s Chief Technology Officer, Euivin Park has had years of experience guiding the engineering teams behind LINE’s phenomenal success. While technical aptitude is always important, Euivin considers a culture of ownership and open-mindedness to be integral in building a strong engineering team. Only in such a culture are engineers motivated to continually push the boundaries of convention and break new ground. In accordance with such a belief, LINE has recently granted external parties the ability to develop chatbots on the app, with all the requisite support platforms in place.
A software engineer by training, Euivin is no stranger to the everyday challenges of the job. Prior to joining LINE’s parent company Naver Corporation in 2005, she worked for both gaming and search engine companies, where she learned the ropes of the industry. Since her appointment to the CTO position in 2014, Euivin has advocated for more autonomy to be granted to developers and engineers, both in-house and otherwise.
