Oppo, Vivo beat everyone to be China’s top smartphone brands

Chinese brands Oppo and Vivo grabbed the most market share to become the top two smartphone brands for the first time in the country in the third quarter, Counterpoint Research says. Huawei, winner of Q2, came in third.

“Oppo and Vivo became the number one and two smartphone brands in China capturing 17 percent and 16 percent share respectively. The two brands, which share the same parent company, now control almost one third of the China smartphone market,” research director, James Yan says.

Xiaomi’s streak of bad luck continues, as does Apple’s. Xiaomi shipments were down 22 percent annually, while Apple’s shipments were down 27 percent.

“The growth of Oppo and Vivo has been mostly in low-to-high-tier (segments) where it has been successful to take share away from Samsung, Lenovo, Coolpad, and to some extent Apple (older models),” research director Neil Shah says.
